- JC's Drum School Detroit -If You're Not Taking Drum Lessons at JC's - You're Not Taking Drum Lessons
Welcome to Detroit’s School of Percussion!
This is not your average drum lesson studio. For over 35 years, we’ve been teaching drummers of every age and skill level. Our School Director has built a lifelong career performing and teaching drums and percussion, and our program has been featured in The Detroit News and Modern Drummer.
Whether you’ve got a 4-year-old curious about rhythm, a middle-school percussionist who needs support, or you’re an experienced player looking for fresh ideas—we’ve got you covered.
We offer Detroit’s most complete program of private and group drum lessons. Not just one drum teacher—we have five! And they’re not just drummers; they’re percussionists who can teach all styles at all levels: Rock, Metal, Jazz, Funk, Blues, Orchestral, Drumline, and more.

You’ll learn in one of our three professional drum rooms, each equipped with REAL acoustic drum kits, marimbas, marching drums, congas, hand drums, and plenty more.
Drum language is unique—and our instructors will challenge you with technical exercises designed to build speed, confidence, and groove.
Our School Director – Joe the Drum Guy, hosts a monthly “One of a Kind” CHOP BUILDING class that focuses on your hand techniques and enhances your private lessons. NOBODY DOES THIS!
Band directors know us and refer us to help their students excel in Marching, Jazz & Symphony bands. Many of our drum students also play in local bands, and churches.

Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT WILL I LEARN IN DRUM LESSONS?
Our drum teachers understand that every student is an individual, with personal musical needs and goals. We make it a priority to tailor how we teach and what we teach to your individual needs. If you enroll here for drum lessons, your teacher will ask you about your favorite type of music, and set goals to help accomplish whatever musical aspirations you have for yourself or your child. Together, you will develop a plan to achieve your goals! We love beginners, so even if you don’t know where to begin, we are the ones that can help!
DO I NEED DRUMS TO TAKE LESSONS?
NO, you do not have to purchase a drum kit to take lessons. In fact, we recommend RENTING first. Many curious young drummers jump into lessons, and then realize how challenging drumming can be. We can provide you with Percussion Kits for school bands, and Drum Sets for our students. We also have new and used sets for sale! As well as practice pads, sticks, and books. Everything you’ll need to get started. We will help guide you.
WHAT STYLES OF MUSIC WILL I LEARN?
We teach all styles from rock, pop, jazz, country, worship, blues and classical. We also excel in Marching Band & Drum line percussion. Our Head of Percussion, Joe Chila, has coached numerous drum lines in the Detroit Area. Rochester – Clawson – Armada – Notre Dame. We know Drums!ARE YOUR DRUM INSTRUCTORS QUALIFIED?
We search for teachers who are best qualified for mentoring our music students! Our instructors all have teaching experience, and most importantly, they have a passion for teaching. Our instructors strive to relate their teaching to each individual student’s learning style. Many of our instructors have been on performance tours and continue to perform professionally around the area. In addition to their teaching credentials, our teachers have warm personalities, are extremely friendly, and strive to get to know each student and their parents on a personal level.HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN TO PLAY DRUMS?
There is no set answer of how long it takes to learn to play drums. With regular practice a basic level of playing can be accomplished in a year or 2. Most of our students take lessons on a long term basis because they want to be constantly improving and they find the lessons enjoyable.
I DON’T HAVE ANY MUSICAL BACKGROUND OR ABILITY. CAN I STILL HELP MY CHILD PRACTICE?
Possibly. Even if you don’t have a musical background you can ask the teacher for advice on how to help your child practice. We recommend you monitor your child’s practice. Make sure they are doing exercises a certain number of times per day. They will progress. Parents will occasionally sit in on their child’s music lesson to get an idea of the proper way a song should sound or how the student should be positioning their hands.
